"No, no sweetheart.  It's never goodbye.  He's waiting by the rainbow bridge.  That is where they all are.  When you cross over, he will come to meet you with your relatives.  Then you all will cross over the bridge to the other side.  Until that time, all our beloved pets play in this beautiful place between where they are loved and cared for, and act as guides for their human counterparts."

While we may miss our loved ones here on Earth in the physical form, they are never truly gone.  They are always with us.  I don't know for certain if there is an afterlife.  But I do know for sure that there is life after death.  And maybe the purpose of it all is just to live.
